30 Rom-Com Books That Defined My 2026

30 Rom Com Books That Defined My 2026

Theme: How rom-coms shape expectations, identity, and love

I didn’t just read romantic comedies — I grew up with them. As a woman, rom-coms were some of the first stories that centered emotions, desire, humor, and flawed heroines who were allowed to want more. Through these books, I learned how love could look messy, funny, awkward, and still deeply meaningful. While the genre is often underestimated, romantic comedies have played a powerful role in shaping how women imagine relationships, independence, and self-worth. This list reflects not only the books I read, but the evolving version of myself who read them.

1. Rewind It Back

Hallie
My family moved in next door to his when I was eleven. He was my first crush when I was thirteen. We fell in love when I was sixteen. We also broke each other’s hearts when I was nineteen. After six years, I’ve secured an internship in a new city with a renowned interior designer.
Regretfully, he plays hockey for that city.

I had assumed that Chicago was huge enough to keep him at bay, but then I received a once-in-a-lifetime surprise and unintentionally moved in next door. Even worse? The renovation project I’ve been given in the hopes of making that internship my ideal full-time position… It’s his home.

But because we can’t even stand to be in the same room, how am I going to transform his bachelor pad into a family home? Even though I used to love Rio DeLuca, I’ve changed since then.

Rio
I never imagined that I would be the sole remaining single person in my friend group.
However, after years of searching for love, I’ve come to the conclusion that it might not exist for me anymore.

That is, until I unintentionally hired Hallie Hart to remodel my home, at which point our tainted past forced me to revisit long-kept secrets. You see, my buddies are unaware of something.

Since moving to Chicago, I’ve been searching for that connection—the one person who some people spend their entire lives trying to discover. At the age of twelve, I had already discovered her. And now the house next door is being occupied by the only girl I’ve ever loved.

2. The Right Move

The last thing I needed this year as the new captain of the Devils, Chicago’s NBA franchise, was for my sister’s best friend, Indy Ivers, to move into my apartment. She is emotional, untidy, and far too alluring. However, I can’t think of a better method to persuade him otherwise than to pretend to date my gregarious roommate when the team’s general manager openly expresses his disdain of my appointment to captain, calling me an unapproachable lone wolf with no work-life balance.

I never thought I would live with NBA star Ryan Shay, the brother of my best friend. Even more incredible? He requires me to take on the role of his devoted girlfriend, who has abruptly transformed him into a personable and amiable man. Because, well, he isn’t. He is in charge of his surroundings and distrustful of other people.

However, our partnership is not one-sided. My ex’s celebrity hero is the ideal date for my upcoming wedding, which will be attended by all of my childhood pals, including my ex-boyfriend.

3. The Fifteen-Minute Rule

Operation: Make Julia fall in love with me without destroying our friendship. Perfect plan, huh? Incorrect. It could have been destroyed by one catastrophically foolish moment, or even a few. We’ve always had a fifteen-minute rule: we may be angry, yell, and despise one another all we want, but after that, we’re back to being best friends.

However, fifteen minutes might not be sufficient this time. Not with Julia’s confidence and our whole “us” life suddenly in jeopardy.

4. Pucking Around

My name is Rachel Price, and two months ago, I walked away from the perfect man. Sweet and funny, and so hot it should be illegal—we shared one magical night. No names. No strings. I never thought I’d see him again.

I was wrong. It turns out Mr. Perfect is the playboy grinder for the Jacksonville Rays, the NHL’s hottest new hockey team…and I’m his new physical therapist. Oh, and the jerk doesn’t even recognize me!

This fellowship is going to be the longest ten months of my life. Mr. Perfect Mistake will do anything to get back on my good side. His greatest pal, however, is the grumpy new equipment manager who is constantly picking on me. The worst part is that my goaltender is obstinate and believes I can’t see that he’s hiding an injury!

I’m not taking any chances with this opportunity to prove myself. However, these men are prepared to push me to the edge with one unexpected night and one secret disclosed. I can’t fall in love with even one player, much less three. However, these guys are competing to win if love is a game.

5. Funny Story

Daphne’s fiancé Peter’s storytelling style was always her favorite. 7. Behind the Net

I’m done having my heart hurt after my ex dashed my hopes for a career in music. It was supposed to be easy to work as an NHL player’s assistant, but nothing about Jamie Streicher is simple. He’s a grumpy, intimidatingly attractive jerk who detests me. The man has a huge ego.

Even if he insists that I move in with him, maintaining professionalism won’t be an issue. But beyond his grumpiness, Jamie is unexpectedly kind and protective.

Jamie’s competitive side comes out when he finds out how awful my ex was in bed, and he encourages and treats me in every way. The inspiration I once had for writing songs? 9. Best Kind of Trouble

Briar
I received the family brewery as an early Christmas gift from my father. Altruistic, huh? However, I only have a budget that will last until the end of the year, and every employee simply quit. A miracle is what I need.

I’m fortunate that Liam, the older brother of my best friend Hannah, is an expert brewer, and she persuades him to leave his job to work for me. Her only request is that I never go out with him.

Making the agreement is simple. After an awkward breakup, I made a pledge to avoid guys, and I would never date someone who worked for me. In addition, Liam is an amateur boxer and, to be honest, a little scary. But as it happens, the only man who has ever truly understood me is my best friend’s moody, extraordinarily gifted big brother.

Liam
I made a vow to my sister that I would never date any of her friends again because the last time I tried, it didn’t work out. Very poorly. I assumed that avoiding Briar wouldn’t be a problem when I accepted this position. She is a daddy’s girl who speaks like a boarding school teacher and has a princess-like appearance. Zanders

Without me—everyone’s favorite player to despise—Chicago hockey wouldn’t be complete. I perform my function successfully because I am aware of it. Actually, I love spending most of my playing time in the penalty box, and every night I leave the arena with a different girl on my arm.

The new flight attendant on our team’s private aircraft is something I dislike. It’s not the other way around; she works for me. However, I’ll be sure to remind her of that, and I can assure you that by the end of the season, she will be pleading to leave her position.

However, every road trip blurs the lines, and I’m not sure if it’s more than just pushing the flight attendant’s buttons by continuously pressing the call button.

Stevie

I’ve worked as a flight attendant for many years. I assumed I would see it all, but when I start working for the most conceited and self-righteous diva in the NHL at my new position, I begin to doubt everything. Including the vow I made to myself that I would never again hook up with an athlete, regardless of how irritatingly alluring he could be.

Evan Zanders is too handsome for his own good, unvarnished, and unrepentant. I detest everything about his image, yet he adores it.

25. Just Breaking The Rules

When I begged my brother’s hockey star best friend to invest in my bakery, I had no intention of having a covert romance with him. Before my ideal store failed, all I needed was a business partner.
